I had lunch today with two journalists from a very well known, global financial newspaper (which is not printed on pink paper). We had a lively discussion on the very topic of this post, which came about because one of the journalists told me a tail of how they protect their brand. He had posted an article on their online portal which quoted a number (let's say for arguments sake 20,000) and then was called by his contact at the source that the contact had made a mistake and the number should be 200,000. However, due to review policies at said publication, published information can only be edited if a verified source confirms the mistake. And the journalists' contact was not on the record with the 20,000 and did not want to be on record for the 200,000. So now the journalist was trying to figure out how to change the incorrect number without having a source. This is the world of our "neighbours": diligence, content quality control to the max.
